Concerto for Double Bass and Strings (Orchestra version)

2018  (32′ duration)

Concerto for Double Bass and Strings was composed for Leonid Finkelshteyn, Principal Double Bassist for the North Carolina Symphony. This concerto is a virtuostic tour de force for the Double Bass.  Set in four movements, the work acknowledges both the ancestry of the composer as well as Mr. Finkelsteyn including forms and styles of the 19th and 20th century central East Europe and Russia, with Yiddish-like themes abounding.

Listen to this interview with Terry and the soloist Leonid Finkelshteyn about the creation of this piece  The Making of a New Double Bass Concerto

I. Allegro Guisto –  is an Allegro in Sonata form with contrasting themes, the second of which has decidedly Yiddish reflections.

II. Romanza alla marcia satirica is a musical tug of war between the march of the orchestra and the romanza of the Double Bass.

III.  Scherzo – This movement is a very rustic scherzo and trio.

IV.  Dances – An extended cadenza precedes the fourth movement. Two dances follow with Russian folk-like music

This Concerto is also available in a Piano reduction. The orchestra version is for Double Bass with solo tuning. The version for Bass with Piano reduction is also available for both solo and standard tuning.
