Four Scenes for Flute and Orchestra (A Mother’s Love)
2001 (22 minutes)
Four Scenes for Flute and Orchestra was commissioned by the husband of Ann Laney, NC Symphony Principal Flutist, to honor her for her triple duties as wife, mother and professional musician.
I “Awakenings” is an ethereal waltz which describes the physical and emotional feelings of a new mother-to-be.
II “Busy Days” describes the new mother juggling her triple duties as wife, mother, and professional musician.
III “Toddlers Dance” uses mixed meter to describe the somewhat jerky dance moves of a two year old.
IV “Lullaby and Reflections” begins with a mother singing her child asleep and later the ethereal music of the first movement returns as the mother herself falls asleep.
